Strategies that promote thinking :

• Ask the child, what’s the story? Who’s involved?

• Take out the numbers in the word problem & just focus on the words

• Cover the word problem and reveal one sentence at a time using paper strips

• Have your child guess what a question could be for the problem based on the information provided, make it a game and see if they can guess the one that is actually being asked
